Vestigii ale epocii bronzului s-au descoperit la S\u0103p\u00e2n\u0163a, dar \u0219i \u00een apropiere, la S\u0103r\u0103s\u0103u, Sighet, Tisa, Rozavlea sau Moisei.<\/p>\n
Perioada dacic\u0103 este \u015fi ea bine reprezentat\u0103 prin ceta\u0163ile dacice g\u0103site la Sighet, Once\u015fti, Slatina \u015fi C\u0103line\u015fti. Istoricii vorbesc despre \u201edacii liberi\u201d din aceast\u0103 zon\u0103, cei care nu au fost cuceri\u021bi de romani \u0219i chiar au f\u0103cut numeroase incursiuni \u00een Dacia ocupat\u0103, contribuind \u00een bun\u0103 m\u0103sur\u0103 la retragerea roman\u0103.<\/p>\n

Numele Zapancha (S\u0103p\u00e2n\u021ba de ast\u0103zi) este men\u0163ionat prima oar\u0103 \u00een 1373 \u00een leg\u0103tur\u0103 cu un conflict legat de propriet\u0103\u0163i, \u00eentre boierii locali \u015fi coloni\u015ftii sa\u015fi \u015fi maghiari adu\u015fi de regatul maghiar. \u00cen acea diplom\u0103 se stabile\u015fte limita dintre teritoriul acordat coloni\u015ftilor (care formeaz\u0103 hotarul C\u00e2mpulungului) \u015fi hotarul S\u0103p\u00e2n\u0163ei. Conflictul a durat mai mult timp \u015fi este men\u0163ionat \u00een mai multe diplome maramure\u015fene (Ioan Mihalyi de Apsa, 1900).<\/p>\n
Un document din 1404 aminte\u015fte de o moar\u0103 pus\u0103 \u00een mi\u015fcare de apele r\u00e2ului S\u0103p\u00e2n\u0163a, despre care Tit Bud precizeaz\u0103 c\u0103 avea dou\u0103 ro\u0163i \u015fi apar\u0163inea M\u0103n\u0103stirii Sf\u00e2ntul Arhanghel Mihail din Peri (azi pe teritoriul Ucrainei).<\/p>\n
